A photograph by Martin Sylvester. In the foreground is a carved figure of Christ, with right hand raised in blessing, and left hand holding a shell - a symbol of baptism and of pilgrimage. Intensely lit, in the background, we see a crucifix. The lifelong pilgrimage of faith that begins with the new life given in baptism passes through suffering and death on the way to resurrection and eternal life.

History of this gateway

Fr Martin Sylvester established the first Catholic parish website in the UK some years ago, when he served the parish and port of Immingham.

At that time, the official site for the Catholic Church in England and Wales had the URL of tasc.ac.uk/cc/. Once domain names became affordable, Fr Martin decided to set up a more intuitively-named gateway at catholic-church.org.uk, and since the UK includes Scotland and Northern Ireland, he made it a gateway to the official sites for those countries too.

As the three offical sites have changed URLs over the years, Fr Martin simply updated the links from this gateway, so catholic-church.org has remained a simple portal to the official sites.

Fr Martin also included some other useful links for people looking for official sites: the Vatican, the Catholic Central Library, the national ecumenical bodies, and so on.
